History

Translated from the ja.wikipedia article ソニー・ミュージックソリューションズ (CC BY-SA 4.0), revision 110612258.

In 1974, a prepress research team was established at CBS/Sony Inc. (now Sony Music Entertainment Inc.).

In 1975, the prepress research team, which later became the foundation of the CBS/Sony GA Business Division, became the printing and prepress department (Manufacturing Section 6) at the Shizuoka Plant.

In 1979, a Creative Center was established within CBS/Sony Records, integrating the prepress division in Shizuoka and the design division in Tokyo.

In 1982, the GA (Graphic Arts) Business Division, the predecessor of the company that would later become CBS/Sony Communications, began operations with more than 40 employees.

In 1987, the GA Business Division was spun off from CBS/Sony and established as CBS/Sony Communications Inc.

In 1991, the company changed its corporate name to Sony Music Communications Inc.

In 1993, it began event planning and operation and store development businesses.

In 1994, following the launch of the PlayStation, it began design and prepress work for game and video software packaging, promotional materials, and related items.

From 1994 to 1997, designers affiliated with label companies in the Sony Music Group were consolidated into SMC's design division in order to strengthen its design capabilities.

In 2002, it integrated the Recording Department (Sony Music Studios) and the Special Sales Department of Sony Music Entertainment Inc.

In 2004, it began planning and eco-solution businesses.

In 2017, it relocated its headquarters from 1-4 Ichigayatamachi, Shinjuku, to Tokyo Midtown.

In 2019, Sony DADC Japan and JARED were absorbed and merged into Sony Music Communications, with the latter as the surviving company, on April 1. On the same date, it also succeeded through an absorption-type company split to part of the Marketing Group, the Market Promote Group, and the Net Business Group businesses of Sony Music Marketing, later Sony Music Marketing United. Following this reorganization, it changed its corporate name to Sony Music Solutions Inc.

On April 1, 2020, it integrated Solasia Entertainment, which operates Asia Dramatic TV, through an absorption-type merger, and made M-On Entertainment a subsidiary.

On April 1, 2021, it integrated Label Gate Inc., a subsidiary of the same Sony Music Entertainment group, through an absorption-type merger. Operation of the music distribution service website mora and other services was transferred to the company.

On September 4, 2024, beginning with the release of the first volume of the anime Tadaima, Okaeri, Happinet Media Marketing became responsible for the release and sale of software, including older titles. Unlike Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) outside Japan, Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan (SPEJ) became involved as the rights holder for all works and lost its software distribution rights for all works. Accordingly, for the first time in 33 years since the CBS/Sony Group era before the corporate name change, the software distribution rights for all works other than those of SPEJ were transferred to Sony Music Solutions.

On April 1, 2026, Sony Music Marketing United will be absorbed and merged into the company, with the company as the surviving entity.
