Sony Music Labels Inc. is a Japanese record company. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment Inc.

In April 2014, it was newly established through the merger of eight label business group companies under Sony Music Entertainment (hereafter SMEJ), with the leading company, Sony Music Records, surviving the merger. Sony Music Direct and Alfa Music, described below, later also joined and merged into the company.

History

Translated from the ja.wikipedia article ソニー・ミュージックレーベルズ (CC BY-SA 4.0), revision 110638558.

On October 1, 2001, Sony Music Records Inc. (hereafter SMR) was established.

On April 1, 2003, SME Records, which had been an in-house label of Sony Music Records, was incorporated as a company under the same name.

On April 1, 2014, as part of a reorganization of SMEJ's group companies, SMR absorbed and merged with the seven label businesses of SME Records, Sony Music Associated Records, Epic Records Japan, Defstar Records, Ariola Japan, Ki/oon Music, and Sony Music Japan International. The company changed its name to Sony Music Labels Inc. As a result, SME Records once again became an in-house label of Sony Music Records, now Sony Music Labels.

On April 1, 2022, Sony Music Direct was absorbed and merged into the company. On the same date, it also succeeded to the label business and master recording rights, except for some, of Alfa Music, whose corporate status was dissolved through its absorption into Sony Music Publishing.
