The Concert

Twelve songs, about 67 minutes, reaching back across the band's whole first decade: "Slaget i Skogen Bortenfor" from the 1993 split with Emperor, Hordanes Land; "Heimdallr" from the debut Vikingligr Veldi; "Jotunblod", "Loke" and "Wotan" from Frost (1994); "Mardraum" from the 2000 album of that name; "Convoys to Nothingness" and "The Voices" from Monumension (2001); and three songs from Below the Lights, which the band had recorded the month before and which was not out until 2003. The set also has a cover of Autopsy's "Retribution for the Dead". Every other song is Ivar Peersen's music, with lyrics by Peersen, Kjetil Grutle (Grutle Kjellson) or, for "Ridicule Swarm", Per A. Husebø (Dirge Rep); "Heimdallr" sets a traditional text.

The line-up on stage is Grutle Kjellson (bass and vocals), Ivar Bjørnson, credited on the case as I. Peersen (guitars), Arve Isdal (lead guitar), Øyvind Madsen (keyboards) and Dirge Rep (drums), each introduced by a caption in the opening minutes. The booklet's biography explains the line-up: R. Kronheim left in March 2002, Isdal and Madsen joined as session players for the live shows, and after the Below the Lights sessions Dirge Rep announced his departure and Isdal became a permanent member. The crew was Metal Mind's Polish one: eight cameras and a camera crane, vision mix by Jacek Dybowski, sound recorded by Monika Krzanowska and mixed by Piotr Brzeziński, with Tomasz Pomarański producing for television and Tomasz Dziubiński as executive producer for Metal Mind.

The Extras

The disc carries an interview with the band, recorded in the Transylwania Pub in Kraków and conducted by Michał Krzywda; a band biography with profiles of each member; a discography; photo and art galleries; desktop images, screen savers and web links; and six audio tracks the case calls rare and never released before: "Sleipnir", "Gylfaginning", "Jotunblod", "Wotan", "Svarte Vidder" and "Viking Metal". The back of the case misprints the first as "Sleipnr"; the disc's own menu spells it "Sleipnir". "Sleipnir" was previously unreleased, the next four are pre-production versions of album songs and "Viking Metal" is a live recording; some editions issued the six as a bonus EP. The menus play Enslaved's own music - "Sigmundskvadet" from Monumension under the main menu, with "Not For Us", "UltraMagnetism", "The Waiting Kills Me" and "Cave Noire" under the other sections - with additional electronic music performed by StrangeHagen, music by Peersen and vocals by Silje Wergeland of Octavia Sperati. The case gives the whole disc as about 115 minutes.

The Package and the Booklet

A single case whose front is a montage of the band's faces under the ENSLAVED logo, the title set in lower-case blackletter, live retaliation; the artwork is by g-r-a-a-l.com. The six-page booklet is mostly a biography in English, from the members' first band, Phobia, in 1990 through the Yggdrasill demo, the Hordanes Land split, the Osmose albums and the line-up changes of 2002 to the trip to Poland "to record a live DVD stuffed to the brim with old and new material". Its last page prints the tracklist with each song's writers, album and label, and the full production credits.
