Career

While in high school, Sato formed a band with Ryota Ogawara. He initially served as vocalist and guitarist, but switched to drums when the band's drummer left. The band was later renamed THE POGO and remained active for a long period.

In 1984, following his activities with THE POGO, he joined the punk rock band KENZI & THE TRIPS as its drummer. In 1986, while active as a member of the band, he served as a support drummer for THE BLUE HEARTS, which did not yet have a drummer at the time. Recordings from this period can be heard on the compilation album JUST A BEAT SHOW. In 1985, he joined THE LOODS, releasing the single “HARD MOUSE” and the Susumu Hirasawa-produced album STOP FUCKIN' AROUND!.

He subsequently remained a member of KENZI & THE TRIPS for many years, but the band disbanded in 1989 due to a drug-related incident involving vocalist KENZI. KENZI & THE TRIPS later reunited without Sato. Immediately afterward, he was invited by Kenji Ueda, the band's bassist, to join the pillows.

In 1995, he first took part as a guest in recordings by The Pees (The ピーズ), who had long been friends with the pillows. Although The Pees suspended activities in 1997, he continued to participate in their performances after they resumed activities in 2002. He subsequently joined The Pees as an official member. In 2003, while still participating in The Pees as a support member, he formed O.P.KING with YO-KING of Magokoro Brothers (真心ブラザーズ), Tamio Okuda, Haruyuki Ooki of The Pees, and himself. He handled drums and vocals, and the group was active for a limited period. He performed at Nippon Budokan with both the pillows and The Pees.

He had not participated in The Pees since 2018. The pillows disbanded on January 31, 2025.

He died of esophageal cancer on March 23, 2026, at the age of 61. His death was announced on March 28 of the same month through the official website of Bad Music Group Music Publishing.
