Hiyama developed an interest in music while in elementary school. He began playing the drum set at the age of 15, and at around the age of 17 received approximately one year of lessons in the drum and percussion departments at Shobi Music Institute. In 1979, he joined Crosswind, a fusion group led by guitarist Ginji Ogawa. He subsequently joined the group of jazz tenor saxophonist Hidehiko Matsumoto, including participating in a tour of the former Soviet Union. In 1982, he joined and recorded with the group of jazz pianist Mikio Masuda. The following year, he joined the band of vocalist Henri Sugano. He later performed with the groups of Naoki Nishi and Kazumasa Akiyama, and in 1989 became an instructor in the drum department at Muse Music School.
In 1990, he joined the second incarnation of Casiopea, remaining with the group until August 1992. During his tenure, he participated in the production of four albums and three video works.
From 1993, he was a member of singer Goro Noguchi's band for two years.
During the 2000s, alongside participating in the live activities of the former idol duo The Lilies, he was a member of ITANI, led by guitarist Nozomi Itani.
