Biography

KEI began drawing in a style connected to his current work while he was a student, submitting character illustrations from the Street Fighter II series to the magazine Gamest and viewing illustrations from Magic Knight Rayearth and Cardcaptor Sakura. He later began participating in Comic Market circles himself after attending Comic Market with a friend who was participating in a circle. After one of his doujinshi caught the attention of an editor at Dengeki Bunko, he made his debut as an illustrator with Kiseki no Hyougen (奇蹟の表現). In 2007, Hatsune Miku, for which he created the design, became an unprecedented hit and brought him widespread attention. His popularity is also high overseas, and he participated in J-POP SUMMIT, held in San Francisco, United States, in 2014.

The Vocaloid producer of the same name, KEI (Hayashi Kei), is a different person.

Doujin Activities

KEI runs a doujin circle called “KEI Garou” (けいがろう), the same name as his personal website. It has become a popular wall circle, or major circle. Due to the Hatsune Miku boom, it was abruptly moved to the shutter-circle, or super-major-circle, area at Comic Market 73 in the winter of 2007.
