Overview
Through repeated group reorganizations, Avex Entertainment was the operating company responsible for all of the Avex Group's consumer-facing businesses from April 2007 to July 2014. It accounted for more than 70% of the group's sales.
Its corporate predecessor was Avex Distribution Inc., which began operations in 1998. It was established by Avex D.D. (then known as such), which did not at the time have its own distribution network and outsourced sales to companies including Nippon Crown, in order to establish a distribution network and eliminate outsourced sales arrangements. Upon the commencement of its operations, it became the distributor of Avex's music and video packages (Avex, the first company, now Avex Group Holdings, subsequently Avex, the second company). In 2005, it changed its corporate name to Avex Marketing Communications Inc., and the music and video package business of Avex—then a newly established company created in connection with its conversion into a holding company in the previous year, and renamed Avex Entertainment at that time—was transferred to it. Thereafter, it served as the releasing and distributing company.
Another predecessor, Avex Network Inc., was established in 2000 as an Internet information services company. In the 2005 group reorganization, it merged with Howdy International Inc., which operated membership businesses, fan clubs, and merchandising, and succeeded to its operations.
In the 2014 group reorganization, the music production business of the former Avex Entertainment, which was renamed Avex Digital, was transferred to the company. Meanwhile, fan club operations and merchandising were transferred to Avex Live Creative, effectively separating the former Howdy International business once again.
As part of the group reorganization of August 1, 2023, its businesses involving the planning, production, and sale of music content, music distribution, music publishing, and related activities were transferred to Avex Music Creative Inc., while its advertising agency operations and businesses involving advertising planning and production were transferred to Avex Alliance & Partners Inc.
