Overview

Wakayama Big Whale was built by Wakayama Prefecture in 1997 on the former site of the Japanese National Railways railway freight terminal, Wakayama Marshalling Yard. Wakayama Big Wave and the Wakayama Big Ai Prefectural Citizens' Exchange Plaza are located on the same site.

At the 70th National Sports Festival in 2015, known in Wakayama Prefecture as the 2015 Kinokuni Wakayama National Sports Festival, it was used as a venue for gymnastics, including artistic gymnastics and rhythmic gymnastics, basketball, and handball. It was also used as the opening ceremony venue for the 36th National Cultural Festival in 2021.

As Minosuke Office Kobukuro, the talent agency to which Kobukuro belongs, is located in Kozaka, Wakayama City, the venue hosts its live event, “Fan Festa”. It is also used for live events by other artists approximately once a year. A Momoiro Clover Z concert was held there in 2013, followed by a Kazumasa Oda concert in 2014, and major artists have continued to hold concerts there since then.

The facility has a water-spraying device designed to resemble a whale's blowhole, which sprays water into the air. However, following complaints that laundry was being soaked because of the many nearby residential areas, use of this feature has been restrained in recent years.
