Rush's first concert DVD: the whole of the final night of the Vapor Trails Tour, filmed at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on November 23, 2002 in front of 40,000 people, with a documentary of the band's first visit to Brazil on a second disc. Zoë Vision and Anthem released it in the US on October 21, 2003 as a two-disc set in a slipcase. It was the band's first video to present one night's entire show, and it won the 2004 Juno Award for Music DVD of the Year.
The concert was directed by Daniel E. Catullo III and produced by Lawrence Jordan, Catullo and Lionel Pasamonte for Coming Home Studios; the sound was recorded, mixed and produced by James "Jimbo" Barton with Alex Lifeson. The crew reached the stadium hours late after the drive from São Paulo, and the band went on with no soundcheck - Neil Peart's essay in the booklet describes the prospect as "unnerving".

Disc 1 - The Concert
The whole set in the order it was played: twenty-nine songs in twenty-seven entries, from "Tom Sawyer" to the closing medley of "By-Tor and the Snow Dog", "Cygnus X-1" and "Working Man", which the package prints and the disc plays as one. A gold Intermission heading marks the show's interval after "Natural Science". Peart's drum solo, "O Baterista", takes its place in the set, and "Resist" is played as a stripped-down acoustic piece for Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. "O Baterista" was nominated for the Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.
The package prints the Permanent Waves song as "Free Will"; the song's own title is "Freewill".
Disc 2 - The Boys in Brazil
The Boys in Brazil is a film of just under an hour by Andrew MacNaughtan, the band's longtime photographer, following band and crew through the Brazilian shows at the end of the tour, with interviews, rehearsal and backstage footage. It was edited by Jennifer Dahl and produced by Allan Weinrib.
Under MX Multiangle, three instrumentals from the Rio show can be watched from more than one camera. "YYZ" and "La Villa Strangiato" each offer an Alex Lifeson, a Geddy Lee and a Neil Peart angle beside the original cut; "O Baterista" offers two alternate angles on Peart's kit. The multi-angle "La Villa Strangiato" runs about seven and a quarter minutes: the opening of the same performance, which runs over ten on disc 1.
The package prints two Easter eggs. "The By-Tor movie" is the animated By-Tor and the Snow Dog film made for the tour's rear screen, reached by pressing enter at its mention in the documentary. "Anthem 1975", unlocked from the menu by the right combination of songs, runs just under four and a half minutes: Rush in 1975 - Lifeson, Lee and Peart - playing "Anthem" on a studio stage set of gothic arches, with no audience.
The Package and the Booklet
A slipcase over a case, both carrying Hugh Syme's art of a dragon in a fruit headdress before a stage on fire; Syme also designed the package. The slipcase alone carries the barcode. The sixteen-page booklet opens with the contents of both discs and the songwriting - every song is Lee/Lifeson/Peart except "Tom Sawyer" (with Dubois), "YYZ" (Lee/Peart), "Closer to the Heart" (with Talbot), "Leave That Thing Alone" and "Working Man" (Lee/Lifeson) and "O Baterista" (Peart).
Peart's essay, "Flying Down to Rio - leaving vapor trails behind", fills five pages. It tells of a tour that ran from June to November 2002 over 66 shows, a Mexico City date added in October, and the three Brazilian stadiums: 25,000 people in Porto Alegre, 60,000 in São Paulo - the largest audience Rush had played to as headliner - and 40,000 in Rio for the final show. The credits fill three more pages: the film and audio crews, the documentary's, and the whole Vapor Trails Tour crew, from Liam Birt the tour manager and Howard Ungerleider at the lights to the drivers and the flight crew.
