Packaging and Liner Notes
Who Knows? is not one concert. The booklet's own account is that the film was compiled from more than 300 hours of live video shot between 2000 and 2004, with footage from 1992, 1994, 1997 and 2005 worked into the main feature, and that the songs were built by what it calls "synch-stacking": aligning the video and audio of three or more concerts into one continuous take. The back panel lists sixteen songs and says only that the disc "includes special features and additional footage". It prints no chapter list, no running time and no Dolby logo, and its audio note says the 5.1 track was "extracted from the original stereo source".
The production is billed two ways on the one object. The booklet's front reads "MVD presents an R. Jayne / R.C.U. Video production"; the film's own end credits say "Produced by Grata Video", with "additional production by R. Jayne / R.C.U.". Grata Video's logo is on the disc face and the booklet's back cover, and nowhere on the jacket. The end credits are also the only place the release credits its performers, and their line-up is not quite the one the booklet describes.
The booklet carries two pieces of prose. Pages 1-2 are a typewritten letter dated September 22, 2004, opening "Dear Andrew" and signed "Dad", about finishing the text for "Who Knows?": changes to the title, and removing the narration. Pages 3-6 are an essay signed "By N.S. 2004" that runs from Andrew W.K.'s birth in Stanford, California, through the live band and its injuries, to the more than 600 shows they played from 2000 to 2004.
