Overview
unBORDE was established by Warner Music Japan (WMJ) on December 21, 2010. At the same time, the management-focused section “unBORDE ARTISTA” was also established. The label head is Ryuma Suzuki.
The seven artists affiliated with the label at its founding were Shinsei Kamattechan, androp, Q;indivi+, Kyushu Otoko, Natsuko Kondo, Yu Takahashi, and RIP SLYME. The label’s first release was Shinsei Kamattechan’s album Tsumanne.
The label’s policy is “sense of the times” and “edge.” Rather than adhering to particular musical genres, it is characterized by a lineup of edgy artists who resonate with young people of the present era. The label’s name derives from a Spanish word meaning “boundary” or “edge” (the English “border”). Suzuki had wanted to use the word “edge” from the label’s planning stage, and chose a Spanish name because Spain, one of his favorite countries, won the 2010 World Cup and because he liked the sound of the word.
When launching the label, Suzuki was concerned about having only new artists. He therefore told the members and manager of RIP SLYME, with whom he had previously worked, that although it was a label made up entirely of newcomers, he wanted RIP SLYME to be its backbone and its senior presence. They readily agreed.
In 2016, to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the label’s establishment, the special unit “unBORDE all stars,” consisting of 12 artists affiliated with the label, released an album on March 9. Its included song “Feel” was used in a Coca-Cola commercial.
