Overview
Craft Egg was established on May 1, 2014, as a subsidiary of CyberAgent after Shuichi Morikawa, who had worked in sales at a consulting company, approached CyberAgent's game division on business and found common ground with one of the company's executives.
In addition to planning, developing, and operating smartphone games, the company undertook character design, setting and scenario production for works produced both by itself and by other companies. Its corporate motto was “Creating content that enriches lives,” and it also upheld “YOLK” (yolk) as a value important to the company. The yolk represented the “Egg” in Craft Egg—that is, the ideas at the core of the company—and development and operations emphasized four values: “user first,” “teamwork,” “challenge,” and “professionalism.” The company name was derived from “craft,” meaning manufacturing, and the Egg of Columbus, referring to the difficulty of making new discoveries.
In its early days, Morikawa wanted to create youth-oriented games about girls using 2D and 3D graphics. However, development was difficult given the company’s size at the time, and it was also necessary to release works as quickly as possible. As a result, Morikawa and director Toru Murakami each served as producer for one title, releasing the smartphone games Monster Puzzle Adventure and Tokyo Mad Carnival, respectively, using game engines within the group. Director Yuichiro Kondo also released Nanairo Run Girls as producer. Although all three titles ended service within a short period, the experience gained from challenging media mix works and engaging with character content led to the company policy of “Creating content that enriches lives,” as well as to the production of the app game BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!, for which Bushiroad commissioned development at the end of 2014, six months after the company’s establishment.
On June 1, 2018, Craft Egg established Colorful Palette Inc. (株式会社Colorful Palette) as a subsidiary and new studio, with the aim of focusing primarily on app development while emphasizing media mix expansion.
In autumn 2020, Craft Egg established Studio Egg (スタジオエッグ) as its voice recording studio in order to resolve issues involving the coordination of cast and staff schedules, reservations for external recording studios, and budget management.
Craft Egg withdrew from smartphone-related business in January 2024. It was absorbed into and dissolved by CyberAgent effective April 1 of the same year, and Colorful Palette consequently became a direct subsidiary of CyberAgent. The company’s remaining business, the figure brand iDELiTE FiGURE, was transferred to Colorful Palette.
Morikawa, who had served as president, separately established From Tokyo Inc. before Craft Egg’s dissolution. Although its shareholders have not been publicly disclosed, it is not part of the CyberAgent group, as it is not listed as a CyberAgent group company and later entered into a capital and business alliance with Bushiroad. The company provides production support to Bushiroad for BanG Dream! Girls Band Party!, Craft Egg’s principal title.
